BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Grand Prairie Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible weldments and fabricated gate parts across Grand Prairie, with most welded repairs on BFT operators and gate frames running $180 to $420 installed, same-day in most cases. The call usually comes after a gate starts dragging, a hinge tears loose from the post, or an operator bracket shears off. Half the time the part itself was fine until a previous weld failed, and that’s where our repair-first approach saves you from buying something you don’t need.

If your BFT gate is sagging, noisy, or not closing square, the problem is rarely the motor. It’s metal fatigue, a cold weld somebody left behind, or a bracket that was never matched to the gate’s weight. We fix that in your driveway, not in a shop across town.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

Over the years, we’ve welded and fabricated for the full BFT lineup that shows up in Grand Prairie driveways: the Deimos, Aries, Phobos, and the older Icaro and Sub series swing gate operators, plus BFT’s hydraulic and electromechanical sliding gate units. The welding typically falls into three buckets: hinge post reinforcement, operator mounting plates, and custom brackets for odd gate-to-operator distances.

Here’s what matters for BFT specifically. BFT mounting plates are punched for European metric bolt patterns, and the plate steel is thinner than what American gate builders often assume. If you weld a heavier local bracket to a BFT operator plate without preheating, the plate warps and the worm gear inside binds. We preheat and stitch-weld when we do this, and we match the replacement hardware to BFT’s metric spec rather than whatever’s rolling around in the truck bin.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: BFT’s factory weldments are fine, but they’re priced like imported precision parts because that’s what they are. For hinge post plates, reinforcement gussets, and gate frame repairs, a properly fabricated local part out of American steel will outlast the factory bracket at a third of the cost. The exception is anything that mounts directly to the operator gearbox; there we stay OEM so the warranty stays intact.

We’re an independent shop, not a BFT dealer or affiliate. Which means when a BFT part is genuinely better, we tell you. When a fabricated equivalent makes more sense, we tell you that too. Hal Gatewood has been making that call in Grand Prairie since 2001, and his name is on every invoice.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags toward the latch side and scrapes the driveway. That’s almost always a hinge post losing its footing, either from a cracked weld at the post base or the post itself bending under weight. The gate didn’t get longer. The mounting failed.
  • The operator bracket clicks or flexes when the gate moves. BFT operators push hard, and a hairline crack in a mounting plate opens and closes with every cycle. You’ll hear it before you see it.
  • Weld spatter or rust trails running down from a joint. Rust bleeding from a weld means the weld was done too cold and never fused. In Grand Prairie’s wet springs and hundred-degree summers, that joint is already failing.
  • The gate jerks or stalls halfway through a cycle. A twisted or warped gate frame binds against the operator’s travel arc. BFT boards read that as an obstruction and reverse or stop. People replace the board. The frame was the problem.
  • You can see daylight through a crack in the frame tube. Split tube steel doesn’t heal itself. Every time it flexes, the crack grows, and one windy day the gate folds.

Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs. No runaround. A cracked hinge post and a worn capacitor both make a gate act sick, but they cost very different money to fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what BFT welding and fabrication work typically runs in Grand Prairie:

professional metalworker welding an ornamental iron gate in a workshop nationwide
  • Hinge post reinforcement or gusset weld: $180 to $280
  • Operator mounting plate repair or fabrication: $220 to $360
  • Gate frame crack repair and strapping: $200 to $380
  • Full hinge replacement with fabricated plates: $300 to $480
  • Custom bracket for BFT operator to non-standard gate: $180 to $340

Every price is quoted and agreed before we touch a tool. You don’t get a surprise invoice after the gate is back on its hinges. The range depends on steel thickness, how much of the old weld has to be ground out, and whether we’re working around gas lines or buried conduit. Every welded repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it isn’t right, we come back and make it right.

We stock common BFT bolt patterns, plate steel in three thicknesses, and replacement metric hardware on the truck. Most Grand Prairie jobs don’t wait on a parts order.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible cracks in the gate frame, wiggle the gate by hand to feel for play at the hinge, and watch the operator bracket while someone else cycles the gate. That’s diagnosis, and it costs you nothing.

Welding a gate frame or hinge post is not a weekend project. You’re working on a moving structure that weighs hundreds of pounds, often under tension, often with live electrical conduit nearby. A gate that falls wrong can kill someone. A weld that fails on a BFT operator plate sends the gate into the street or through a car door. We do this work on site with proper welding equipment and two decades of Grand Prairie gate repair behind it. If you’re not sure whether it’s a weld issue or a motor issue, call (903) 829-4499 and describe what the gate is doing. The estimate is free.
