Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• The keypad needs multiple presses before it registers. This usually means the membrane or tactile switches under the keys are worn out. In Grand Prairie heat, those contacts fatigue faster than the electronics themselves.
• The keypad works in the morning but not the afternoon. That’s a classic heat-related expansion issue. The solder joints or ribbon connector move just enough in the sun to break contact. We see it all summer in Dalworth Park and along I-20.
• The intercom works but the keypad won’t open the gate, or vice versa. Separate circuits inside the same housing fail independently. The intercom might be fine while the keypad matrix is dead.
• The keypad lights up but does nothing when you enter the code. Often a corroded relay or a wiring fault between the keypad and the operator board, not a bad keypad. We test before we quote, which keeps your bill honest.
• The intercom audio is scratchy, faint, or has a hum. Moisture in the speaker housing or a failing audio transformer. It’s repairable in many cases without swapping the whole unit.

DIY or Call Us?

Keypads and intercom units run at low voltage, generally 12 to 24 volts, so the shock risk is minimal. The real danger in a DIY swap is mis-wiring the keypad to a gate operator that does carry line voltage. If you short the wrong terminals or wire a 12-volt keypad into a 24-volt board, you can take out the operator’s control board, and that’s a $400 mistake instead of a $200 repair.

What you can safely check: confirm the breaker for the gate operator hasn’t tripped, look for obvious corrosion at the wire terminals, and listen for a click when you press a key.
